According to Plan
The Unfolding Revelation of God in the Bible
      By: Graeme Goldsworthy

Greame Goldsworthy’s According to Plan is a wonderful tool for both Christians who feel lost in the immensity of Scripture struggling with the idea of where to start, as well as for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the central message of the whole Bible. In this book, Goldsworthy covers the landscape of the whole Bible from a bird’s eye view. He teaches the reader how to grasp the ‘big picture’ and central message of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Goldsworthy teaches that the central message of Scripture is the establishment of the Kingdom of God, which climaxes in the birth, life, death, resurrection and triumphant return of Jesus Christ. Reading this book will enable you to see how the whole counsel of God centers upon Jesus Christ and that the beauty of his saving work is to be seen and savored upon every page.

Desiring God
     Meditations of a Christian Hedonist
      By: John Piper

Desiring God by John Piper is a book that seeks to show you that your happiness and God’s glory are not at odds.  On the contrary, if you are not joyful, then God will not be honored.  What is the key to living with this kind of persistent joy without being totally self-absorbed in our own sinful, idolatrous desires?  Making your chief enjoyment God Himself, which is why you and I were created in the first place.  In this book Piper brings you along his own journey of this discovery.  Then he applies this powerful truth to a variety of important issues for our lives: conversion, money, marriage, and even joy in God in the midst of suffering.  This book is worth reading, re-reading, and meditating on for a lifetime.  Dive in and dig deep to find out that “God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him.”

Essential Truths of the Christian Faith
      By: R. C. Sproul

RC Sproul states, “No Christian can avoid theology.  The issue then, is not, do we want to have a theology?  That’s a given.  The real issue is, do we have a sound theology?  Do we embrace true or false doctrine?”
In his book, Essential Truths of the Christian Faith, Sproul presents 100 of Christianity’s most essential doctrines, and does it with the lay person in mind.  Each doctrine is explained in such a way as to give you a snapshot of its origin, definition and varying views.  Divine Revelation, The Tri-unity of God, Creator, The Deity of Christ, The Personality of the Holy Spirit, Satan, Predestination, Infant Baptism and End Times are just some of the doctrines Sproul tackles in an easily understandable format – “simple, but not simplistic”.
This book is for everyone, no matter what theological background or level of discipleship training.  Begin your journey into the richness of Christian doctrine or formulate an organized way to develop your theology.  Whatever the case, this book will surely enhance your lifelong journey and study of theology.

Future Grace
The Purifying Power of Living by Faith in Future Grace
      By: John Piper

“The driving force of radical Christian living is not backward-looking gratitude, but forward-looking faith.”  John Piper sums up his work, Future Grace, very well with this phrase.  Piper walks through numerous texts in order to display the promises of God of which the believer may lay hold each day and in every situation. God’s grace, rooted in the work of the Son, is abundant and eternal, and believers find great hope, courage, and joy as they trust in the promises of grace. Piper takes time to explain how faith in God’s promises will help us to overcome the empty and deceitful promises of specific sins. Future Grace contains 31 short chapters so that it may be read daily over one month. It is a very encouraging and practical book, and I would recommend it to every believer, regardless of your place in your journey of following Christ.

Living the Cross Centered Life
Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing
      By: C. J. Mahaney

The sub-title to this excellent little book is "Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing."  This captures the heart of Mahaney's challenge to be passionate about the gospel and to allow it to affect the way we look at the world and all of life.  The Gospel is more than a prayer or a salvation experience, it is central to every aspect of our faith. Thus, we should never think of the Gospel in the past tense.  Instead,we should prayerfully and joyfully pursue a deeper, more profound understanding of the cross.  The purpose of Living the Cross Centered Life is to help lead us in that pursuit of responding with our whole lives to the gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  The content of this book is very practical, but it does not in any way neglect the great theological truths of justification, propitiation, redemption, and reconciliation.  We recently went through this book in our small group at our church, and God used it to help lead each of us into a greater understanding of why the Gospel is the Good News!  We were also challenged with practical ways to focus daily on the cross.  This is a short book that is not difficult to read, but its content is Scriptural and its exhortation to boast only in the cross is powerful.

Nine Marks of a Healthy Church
      By: Mark Dever

Nine Marks of a Healthy Church by Mark Dever provides a criterion by which to evaluate one’s own church and its faithfulness to biblical ministry. This work by Dever was the foundation for his ministry to other churches entitled IX Marks. Dever presents a historical perspective of biblical principles for church leadership in practical, pleading terms. His nine marks are subdivided into five marks that demonstrate the preaching of the message and four marks of leading the disciples. Each chapter includes insightful Scriptural citations, historical anecdotes, and pastoral insights to further his argument. Nine Marks gives a Scriptural guide to declare a church with a clean bill of health.

Overcoming Sin and Temptation
Three Classic Works by John Owen
      By: John Owen

After the Bible, Overcoming Sin and Temptation is the most spiritually challenging and transforming book that I have read. The book is a compilation of three of John Owen’s works that have been formatted and edited in a reader-friendly manner. Owen explores the nature of sin and the necessity and manner in which believers can through the Spirit put to death the deeds of the flesh. While it is not the quickest read, it is without a doubt worth your time and thought. I am confident that a careful reading of this book will not leave you unchanged, and the application of this book’s truth can protect you from sin and its consequences. We are all in a battle against sin; if you find yourself struggling for victory, do not grow weary, but instead soak your mind in the Word and run to this book.

The Big Picture Story Bible
      By: David Helm

There are many things to appreciate about this children’s Bible, the first being that God is the most important character.
Aside from the amazing illustrations that are sure to pull your child in, the biblical theme of God keeping all His promises is central. This theme is fleshed out in God’s promise to Abraham, God’s promise to send a Savior, and God’s promise to establish His kingdom both now and when He returns.
Jesus is seen as the King, as well as the fulfillment of all the Old Testament Scriptures. “God’s place” goes from being the garden of Eden to the temple in Israel to Jesus Himself as the temple. Themes of sin, redemption and restoration are seen from the first page to the last.
This Bible helps with giving a clear understanding of the big picture - God keeps all His promises in King Jesus.

The Jesus Storybook Bible
     Every Story Whispers His Name
      By: Sally Lloyd-Jones

Raising Christ-centered and God honoring children is a challenging task from many angles. That is why as parents we must avail ourselves to as many God honoring resources for training our children as possible. One such resource, that in my estimations is a ‘must’, is The Jesus Storybook Bible. As stated in the subtitle, Sally Lloyd-Jones demonstrates, through biblical storytelling and beautiful illustrating, how every story whispers Jesus’ name. It is absolutely critical that we teach our children this truth at the earliest of their Bible learning days. I would encourage all parents of younger children that The Jesus Storybook Bible is a wonderful Christ-centered resource that will equip you to better teach and train your children in the way in which they should go.

The Pleasures of God
Meditations on God's Delight in Being God
      By: John Piper

In this widely acclaimed Christian meditation on "God's delight in being God," Piper demonstrates that God's love for himself is central to his love for his people. So far from being rivals, God's passion to be glorified spills over into the redemption of his creation and returns to him as he inhabits the praises of his redeemed saints. With biblical precision and pastoral care, Piper sets the infinite joy of God on full display. Not only does the Pleasures of God shed light on this important biblical theme, but it invites Christians to rejoice in the glory of their God, and ultimately, to find their hope in it.

The Reason for God
Belief in an Age of Skepticism
      By: Timothy Keller

Dr. Timothy Keller's The Reason for God marks a significant step forward in the classic dialogue concerning the relationship between faith and reason. The skeptic will be pleased that Keller articulates his or her objections to faith accurately, carefully, and sympathetically, while the believer—whether church member, pastor, or scholar—will benefit from the overflowing well of arguments from which to draw during day to day discussion and interaction with unbelievers. From Hume to Nietzsche, Dostoevsky to Tolstoy, Calvin to Edwards, and Bono to Hitler, Keller follows the lead of the apostle Paul by calling on the popular philosophers, poets, theologians, and other culture makers of his day to assist him in showing that common objections to faith are not as strong as they may first appear and that there are, indeed, adequate reasons for belief in God. Academically rigorous, philosophically precise, theologically sharp, and culturally insightful, yet accessible and concise:  Keller’s work must find its way into the hands of believers and skeptics alike to aid in tearing down obstacles to the spreading of the gospel of Christ in a post-Christian society.  I cannot recommend this book enough!
